Current Matches : Sri Lanka v Pakistan (in U.A.E) (2011)

Author: sam_ahmedSubject: Sri Lanka v Pakistan (in U.A.E) (2011)Posted: 03 October 2011 at 7:30pmThere is plenty of cricket in October and all 10 test playing nations will be in action... This series should be the most interesting of all because I think it is between two very evenly matched teams.PAK drop Umer Akmal from the test squad, Shafiq and Malik make comebacks, Gul, Wahab and Abdur Rahman also make it to the test squad while Tanvir Ahmed is very unfortunate to have lost his spot to Aizaz Cheema. Junaid Khan retains his place.List of Fixtures:Tue Oct 18 - Sat Oct 22 06:00 GMT | 10:00 local11:30 IST1st Test - Pakistan v Sri LankaSheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu DhabiWed Oct 26 - Sun Oct 30 06:00 GMT | 10:00 local11:30 IST2nd Test - Pakistan v Sri LankaDubai International Cricket StadiumThu Nov 3 - Mon Nov 7 06:00 GMT | 10:00 local11:30 IST3rd Test - Pakistan v Sri LankaSharjah Cricket Association StadiumFri Nov 11           11:00 GMT | 15:00 local16:30 IST1st ODI - Pakistan v Sri LankaDubai International Cricket StadiumMon Nov 14           11:00 GMT | 15:00 local16:30 IST2nd ODI - Pakistan v Sri LankaDubai International Cricket StadiumFri Nov 18           11:00 GMT | 15:00 local16:30 IST3rd ODI - Pakistan v Sri LankaDubai International Cricket StadiumSun Nov 20           11:00 GMT | 15:00 local16:30 IST4th ODI - Pakistan v Sri LankaSharjah Cricket Association StadiumWed Nov 23           11:00 GMT | 15:00 local16:30 IST5th ODI - Pakistan v Sri LankaSheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu DhabiFri Nov 25           17:00 GMT | 21:00 local22:30 ISTOnly T20I - Pakistan v Sri LankaSheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi

Current Matches : West Indies in Bangladesh (2011)

Author: sam_ahmedSubject: West Indies in Bangladesh (2011)Posted: 01 October 2011 at 3:06pmJust a few days before this starts, Musfiqur Rahim's first assignment as captain and these are two sides desperate for a series win, still no Chris Gayle for WI, I'd say WI will start off as favorites in both tests and ODI's. However, last year BAN did managed to beat NZL 4-0 so at home they can be a dangerous side, should be a good contest, big test for BAN to show their competitiveness, big chance for WI to get back to winning ways before they take on India. Author: sam_ahmedSubject: England in India (2011)Posted: 28 September 2011 at 6:43pmENG tour India for 5 ODI's and 1 T20 in what will be a subcontinental test for them. ENG have announced their squad with Kevin Pieterson making a comeback, a couple of new faces in the squad and I don't know much about them.India are expected to announce their squad for the first two ODI's tomorrow, Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Munaf and Zaheer are all still injured, Gauti should be back though and they are considering bringing back Nehra, although I would seriously want to see Irfan pathan back in the team, he certainly can do a lot better than all those who were tried in ENG.List of Fixtures:Sat Oct 8 04:00 GMT | 09:30 local09:30 ISTTBC v England XIGymkhana Ground, Hyderabad Tue Oct 11 04:00 GMT | 09:30 local09:30 ISTTBC v England XIGymkhana Ground, Hyderabad Fri Oct 14           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST1st ODI - India v EnglandRajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, HyderabadMon Oct 17           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST2nd ODI - India v EnglandFeroz Shah Kotla, DelhiThu Oct 20           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST3rd ODI - India v EnglandPunjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, ChandigarhSun Oct 23           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST4th ODI - India v EnglandWankhede Stadium, MumbaiTue Oct 25           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST5th ODI - India v EnglandEden Gardens, KolkataSat Oct 29           14:30 GMT | 20:00 local20:00 ISTOnly T20I - India v EnglandEden Gardens, Kolkata

Current Matches : Australia in South Africa

Author: MikeySubject: Australia in South AfricaPosted: 28 September 2011 at 11:41amAustralia will be touring South Africa, the nation which is ranked no.2 in Test cricket. The T20 squad for Australia has been announced with Johnson dropped - no surprises there. Haddin has retired from the format and the incumbent Tim Paine is out injured, nonetheless Wade is the better option. Paine is a test specialist in my opinion and I'd like to see him in the test side as soon as possible, even ahead of Haddin.Mitchell Marsh, brother of Shaun, is in the squad ahead of Hastings who is also injured. He's a 19 year old all rounder who Mickey Arthur compares to Jacques Kallis. He's a genuine all rounder and from the looks of things his game is a lot better than Moises Henriques, whose career never really took off.The other bolter is Patrick Cummins, the 18 year old NSW fast bowler who scored a CA contract out of no where. I've seen the kid bowl and he already hits 150kph, believe it or not. He has been doing a lot of weight and strength training and presumably he's still growing so on that basis it wouldn't surprise me if he continued to his 150kph on a regular basis. His action looks a little bit like Anderson's, but there's a little bit of Mohammed Zahid about the way he bowls. The way the ball rises and the sheer pace is very Zahid-esque. That is, if anybody has seen Zahid bowl before. I haven't seen anyone this genuinely quick emerge from Australia at SUCH a young age since Lee or maybe Tait, although Cummins' action is more orthodox and not round arm/slingy.

Coaching : weak core muscles

Author: michaelbSubject: weak core musclesPosted: 27 September 2011 at 10:50pmToo often I see people in the gym performing crunch after crunch to try and improve core strength.  Studies have proven this to be dangerous for the spine and an ineffective way to train the core. The core’s main function is to stabilize or prevent movement. This is not to say that flexion or extension should be totally neglected because you do need to have this type of core strength especially if you are a sports person.Check out this article for more on this topic and see the video below of some core strength exercise progressions that you can incorporate into your workouts. http://www.strengthspeedagility.com/core-training-best-core-strength-exercises/Core Strength and Stability Rollout Progression - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbWCgrN7UwUCore Training Anti Lateral Flexion (Landmine) -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZcTiM-aZ58

Current Matches : West Indies in England - 2 T20's

Author: SledgerSubject: West Indies in England - 2 T20'sPosted: 23 September 2011 at 6:27amI suppose this mini-series needs it's own thread , but it won't fill too many pages !   The 2 T20's have been arranged because of the original agreement between the ECB and Standford (who's still under investigation) -it was do this or repay a lot of money!   Graeme Swann is England captain because of Broad's injury and he leads a very young side. Many of the Windies star names are absent too , so the English will start favourite.             The 1st game is today , with the 2nd on Sunday.  Ticket sales have been brisk - hardy souls in England , because cricket at the end of September can be a bum-numbing affair !

Championship team of season

Marcus TrescothickAs imperious as ever, Trescothick scored 290 more runs than anyone else in either division, despite missing three games to a cruel injury. His dominance is such that it has become a cliché to describe him as batting on a different pitch from everyone else.Mike CarberryThough it wasn’t enough to keep Hampshire in division one, Carberry’s return, after fears his career was over, was astounding. Against Yorkshire, he hit 300*, displaying the range of shots and concentration that earned him an England Test cap only 18 months ago, while his last-day century against Warwickshire denied them the title.Chris RogersBrought in to average over 50 and lead a side to promotion that finished eighth in division two in the previous two seasons, Rogers made the twin challenges seem positively easy.Dale BenkensteinThere was no third championship in four years for Durham, but Benkenstein’s excellence remained unabated: only Trescothick exceeded his 1353 division one run
s. Long established as his side’s crisis man, Benkenstein’s experience as skipper was a valuable aid for Phil Mustard.Zander de BruynIn a Surrey top six that is as gung-ho as they come, de Bruyn provides stickability, and two hundreds and two fifties in the last three games allowed Surrey to claim a remarkable promotion. Somerset fans, not unreasonably, will feel they might just have won the championship had he not been lured to The Oval.Jonny Bairstow (wicket-keeper)In an otherwise bleak season for Yorkshire Bairstow’s excellence, culminating in a memorable England ODI debut, provided some solace. Attractive and calm in front of the stumps, he scored his runs at a strike-rate â€" 69 â€" that few top-order batsmen can match. With the gloves Bairstow improved but is not yet the equal of his late father. Will GidmanWith one first-class appearance before the season began, bookmakers would have given any odds on Gidman becoming the first man for 15 years to score 1000 champ
ionship runs and take 50 wickets. But do that he did; and with a batting average (45) more than double his bowling one (21). A late developer at 26, Gidman deserves England Lions recognition.Glen Chapple (captain)It’s not only sentimentality that earns Chapple a place in this side, which his achievement in lifting the pennant without stars ensures he leads. At 37, his canny fast-medium bowling was effective enough to claim 55 wickets at under 20, despite often not being fully fit. Though he was uncharacteristically short of runs, Lancashire would not have won the championship without his 97 in their penultimate game.Tim MurtaghUnlucky to never represent England (though he may yet play for Ireland), Murtagh’s best season yet propelled Middlesex to promotion. A round 80 wickets in 15 matches highlight his potency, which is especially great with the new ball, as a three-wicket bust in 16 balls against Derbyshire illustrates.David MastersLazy cricket writers have spent years
describing Masters as a “nagging seamer” and “journeyman”, but he forced them to be rather more imaginative after claiming 93 wickets. Masters’ mastery of the Tiflex ball and constant ability to seam it was never more evident than when he claimed 8/10 against Leicestershire.Gary KeedyThe mark of Keedy’s bowling is that his left-arm spin is almost as effective in April as August, while his parsimony (giving away just 2.5 an over) means Lancashire never lost control in the field. His 4-57 from 28 overs in the first innings of the victory at Taunton perfectly encapsulated his qualities.

Further when you bowl in the nets, bowl medium pace n increase it very slowly and then see the miracles.

Historical Figures

I was playing around with the idea (suggested by my old mate JB) of how various historical figures would have fared as cricketers. And this is what I came up with.

Galileo Galilei

Batsman - A failure - always batted at no. 11. Spent too much time observing what the bowler was trying to do, and too little time actually reacting. Should have listened more to the ultimately sage advice of the former opening batsman Kepler.

Bowler - This was his real strength. You hear talk about bowlers 'gaining pace' off the pitch - GG was a master at this. He had truly mastered the ability to uniformly accelerate the ball.

Fielder - Particularly strong under the high ball - an expert at judging the parabola of hits into the outfield.

Overall - Great potential that was ultimately undone by off-field politics. He should never have written his autobiography "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" in which he openly criticized the excessive power base wielded by the BCCI and argued that the world of cricket did not rotate simply around India. It ultimately resulted in the loss of his T20 contract and his career finished in anonymity.

Stephen Hawking

Batting - Formed a solid opening partnership with Penrose. Good technique with a penchant for taking quick singularities. Did have some trouble in running threes until he improved his turning circle. Most remembered now for popularising the block hole paradox shot, which revolutionised how to play yorkers in T20 cricket.

Bowling - Nil. Reminiscent of the late 1950s with Gordon Rorke, Hawking's truly unique bowling style was quickly outlawed, as his very long delivery slide meant that umpires could not accurately determine the legality of the ball and he often was able to release the ball nearly half way down the pitch.

Fielding - Great short leg fielder with an ability to get a considerable amount of mass behind the ball. Noted sledger from close in, but some pedants have raised concerns that many of his memorable lines were scripted.

Overall - Often remembered in the same category as Mike Brearly: a magnificent cricketing brain that perhaps over-shadowed his physical abilities. Once again though - great sledger. Best line is probably the classic and oft repeated "When I hear of Schrodinger's bat, I reach for my pistol."

Michael Jackson

Batting - A modern figure that harked back to the grand days of George Bonner, Jackson was a child prodigy that was picked primarily for his aggressive stroking of the tail end, particularly in under-age teams. He had many big hits around the world, and still holds a number of records. His nickname of Whacko Jacko quickly emerged after his stunning debut performance in the IPL when he combined with Indian superstar, Off the Wall Rahul Dravid. He was famous for walking, even before Gilly made it commonplace.

Bowling - Jackson was only an occasional bowler, but gained a second, but less flattering nickname, as the King of Long Hops. He did establish a long standing sponsorship with Pepsi but was ultimately burnt by the deal.

Fielding - Jackson's reputation was largely ruined on the basis of a number of eventually unsubstantiated claims of balls tampering. Many influential people believed he was a fiddler when no-one was watching, but this could not be proven.

Post Cricket - After retiring, Jackson went on to a surprisingly successful career as an umpire. Similar to Australian Darrell Hair, he was a firm decision maker as he saw everything as black and white. He stood in many different tests that ended in thrillers, but also found himself in a number of bad and dangerous situations, however his attitude that he was invincible ultimately saw him through. Jackson sadly passed away recent just before a long awaited comeback as a match referee.

India have won so much, won World Cup, been at top spot for good amount of time, acheived things which none expected them when they toured overseas and infact have played some very good consistent cricket in last 10 years. Give them a break, what goes up has to come down for some time.  Just chill mate and meanwhile enjoy T20 World Champs vs ODI World Champs tonight . Off-Topic Forum : APOLLO : one giant hoax Yes/No

Author: flipperSubject: APOLLO : one giant hoax Yes/NoPosted: 26 August 2011 at 6:21pmAPOLLO : one giant hoax At the present time, nowhere on Earth does there exist, nor is there any prospect in the foreseeable future of there being, the technology to put men on the moon and bring them back safely. When NASA realised that President Kennedy’s 1961 call, for a man on the moon and back alive before the end of the decade, was totally impossible, they decided, rather than lose face, to hoax the whole thing. With $40 billion â€" at 1961 rates â€" available, the scope for deception was endless. The major problem was the impossibility of overcoming the cosmic radiation threat within and beyond the Earth’s Van Allen Belts and on the moon’s surface. At least 5 feet of lead would be needed in all directions to protect the voyagers : for one man, in a telephone kiosk, this would involve a thousand tons of lead. 35-plus years later, the unprotected Apollo travellers, all of whom would have been fried, have shown no signs of radiation sickness. Another problem was the inability of NASA to produce a stable craft which was intended to be the lunar landing module. “Lunar astronaut”, Neil Amstrong, almost lost his life when one of the prototype flying-bedstead LMs crashed and disintegrated. The problems were never even close to being solved. The highly secret Area 51, in the Nevada Desert, is believed to be the location for the film studios â€" still visible from satellite photographs â€" which produced the television programmes â€" “live from the Moon”, whilst the astronauts merely sat out their time 200 miles above the Earth’s surface. The official NASA record of the six Apollo excursions is so full of basic mistakes that various observers believe that some NASA personnel, very unhappy at being forced to be part of the hoax, deliberately left what would become obvious flaws in the record. The American flag flapping in the atmosphere-free, windless conditions ; the school-boy-level fake “moon photographs” and their difference from the live (film studio) transmissions ; the miracle of the standard Kodak film which withstood the X-rays and the extremes of heat and cold - 250 to minus-250 degrees ; the chest-mounted cameras which, without a viewfinder, produced hundreds of clear, well-framed photographs ; the multiple light sources ; the clear, uninterrupted voices of the astronauts as they sat above 10,000 lb-thrust, 140-decibel rockets ; the lack of any crater beneath the LMs; the lack of any exhaust smoke from the LM rockets (as it was pulled upwards, Thunderbird-style, by puppet strings in the studio) ; the lack of any stars in the lunar sky ; … and so on. The impression that the men and vehicles were moving in a less dense gravity was created by simply slowing down the film to half-speed. One of the “whistle-blowers”, Bill Kaysing, former analyst and engineer with Rocketdyne, the Apollo rocket designers estimated that “.. there were 85 completely separate manoeuvres involved in a lunar landing. Statisticians have calculated that the chances of completing this set of manoeuvres six times, without a single failure, were totally beyond the realms of possibility”. Kaysing also reckoned that the chances of a successful, manned return trip to the moon were .0017%. Other informants have not been so lucky. The outstanding critic of America’s chances of lunar success, Gus Grissom was one of ten astronauts who had “freak fatal accidents” between 1964 & 67. Apollo 1 safety inspector, Thomas Baron, produced a 500-page report. He stated that “The Apollo 1 programme was in such disarray that America would never make it to the moon.” One week later Baron and his family were killed in a road crash : the report disappeared. Although the Americans recruited over 120 Nazi space scientists for their use, the Apollo scam is well beyond anything in the Joseph Goebbels Manual of Public Relations. Channels 4 and 5 TV have broadcast programmes exposing the fraud, but the Establishment media, led by -who else?- the BBC, have taken every opportunity to reinforce the hoax, with very good reason. If it were generally accepted that The Scientists have told us a pack of lies on “Man’s Greatest Achievement” - and they have - even the most trusting of punter is likely to ask on what else would they deceive us : answer - everything.

Rumours are that Malik might soon be given the captaincy once Misbah decides to retire. Malik though, at the moment, is not a part of the team touring Zimbabwe.PAK have selected quite a few young faces for this series though, botn Umer Gul and Wahab Riaz have been rested (quite strangely because PAK haven't been playing since 3 months) Sohail Tanvir comes back and Aijaz Cheema gets his first chance at int'l level. Young opener Rameez Raja has also been given an opportunity to shine (and I hope he is different from the old Rameez Raja, one of the most boring players I have ever seen). Author: sam_ahmedSubject: Bangladesh in Zimbabwe (2011)Posted: 26 July 2011 at 7:22pmWith IND-ENG, SLN -AUS, there won't be many who would care about this but then this series will perhaps be a more competative one than the other two that are taking place.Zimbabwe return to test cricket under a "white" captain in Brendon Taylor and while Bangladesh start off as firm favorites, I expect Zimbabwe to challenge then big time, I think in home conditions ZIM can match Bangladesh but then Bangla boys are more talented and have had good results against Zimbabwe in the past.Sat Jul 30 - Mon Aug 107:30 GMT | 09:30 local13:00 IST Zimbabwe XI v BangladeshisHarare Sports Club Thu Aug 4 - Mon Aug 807:30 GMT | 09:30 local13:00 IST Only Test - Zimbabwe v BangladeshHarare Sports Club Fri Aug 1207:00 GMT | 09:00 local12:30 IST 1st ODI - Zimbabwe v BangladeshHarare Sports Club Sun Aug 1407:00 GMT | 09:00 local12:30 IST 2nd ODI - Zimbabwe v BangladeshHarare Sports Club Tue Aug 1607:00 GMT | 09:00 local12:30 IST 3rd ODI - Zimbabwe v BangladeshHarare Sports Club Fri Aug 1907:00 GMT | 09:00 local12:30 IST 4th ODI - Zimbabwe v BangladeshQueens Sports Club, Bulawayo Sun Aug 2107:00 GMT | 09:00 local12:30 IST 5th ODI - Zimbabwe v BangladeshQueens Sports Club, Bulawayo Edited by sam_ahmed - Today at 7:23pm

Current Matches : Australia in Sri Lanka

Author: MikeySubject: Australia in Sri LankaPosted: 26 July 2011 at 9:43amAustralia will be touring Sri Lanka shortly for the first time since 2004. The tour will include 2 T20I's, 5 ODIs and 3 tests. The following squad was selected for Australia: Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle, Trent Copeland, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Michael BeerThe notable exclusion is Steven Smith. The selectors have finally realised that picking a player as a specialist fielder will not work - his bowling nor his batting are adequate for test selection. His next test will probably be as a specialist batsman at some stage in the future if he is ever to play tests for Australia. Copeland and Pattinson are the rookie fast bowlers that have been selected, Copeland has been particularly good in first class cricket, with Australia having a lot of fast bowling options to pick from, he was the one that was given the nod. Pattinson is a young bolter and there are some big expectations on him too. His brother played for England a couple of years ago, but James is born in Australia and has played all his cricket here. Nathan Lyon, the South Australia off break bowler has been strangely selected, just as Michael Beer and this series will probably ruin both of them... no surprises there. Hauritz is still injured and Krejza is still rubbish.Harris is back and Bollinger has not been picked! But it looks a good decision, Dougie really struggles to maintain his intensity, while Harris is probably one of the fastest bowlers in the world at the moment. Tim Paine has not been picked at all, but we do see Marsh and Khawaja included, one of the will play. While Hughes will open, he has been in fantastic form and hopefully he can translate his talent into runs. I won't write the kid off just yet! Warner is also backing off from a double ton in a first class game vs Zim A and is proving his credentials in the longer form - Hughes will have competition that's for sure. All in all, both teams are struggling for form in the longer format. SL will have home advantage and even though they do have better spin talent, none of the options really match Murali. Should be a decent series.

General Cricket Talk : Cricket Jokes

Author: vote4peaceSubject: Cricket JokesPosted: 25 July 2011 at 10:46amLeading from the front???The standard of batting in the local side was very low. Even at the net practice, they couldn't hit a thing. Finally, the captain rushed forward and grabbed the bat."Now bowl me some fast ones," he yelled. Six fast balls came down in quick succession and the captain missed them all. Not to be put off, he glared at the team and shouted,"That's what you're all doing. Now get in there and hit them!"

Off-Topic Forum : Final Fantasy X-2 , Killer 7 , Batman....

Author: jamesabytrSubject: Final Fantasy X-2 , Killer 7 , Batman....Posted: 21 July 2011 at 5:24pmSo a typical day of me doing gaming research caused me to run into something I had not realized. For my most recent FFX-2 video, I mentioned I really don't like the voice acting though this has in fairness, been true for most of the FF series. It is not really because the actors themselves and usually bad (In fact, most times they play there parts perfectly) It is because the characters they portray are just badly written. Now because of some serious problems with my editor, I watched several of the same video clips over and over again which got me to thinking, I know one of these voices, (You own as many video games as me and some voices you pick up on no matter how different it sounds) in this case, I realized I recognized Rikku's voice from another game so I called up her credits.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara_StrongGopHoly Mother of god! Just how many voices has she done....at the same time!?!?!? based on this she would be recording for multiple games, movies, and TV shows all in the same year!In case you don't look right away, her name is Tara Strong and she is one of (if not the) most active voice over actresses in both the gaming and TV world. For This Year Alone! She is recording for the following games.Cartoon Network; Punch Time Explosion- Bubbles, Buttercup, Chowder and DexterShadows of the Damned- JustineBatman Arkham City- Harley QuinnThose however are only this years new projects. In TV and Movie, she is currently working on I believe 9 different projects. If you have watched any cartoons, played any video games or watched any Hayao Miyazaki films in the last 20 years, chances are you have heard her voice. So a quick tribute to a very talented lady.......will not stop me from hating Rikku's character though

General Cricket Talk : ICC contemplates timeless tests..

Author: SledgerSubject: ICC contemplates timeless tests..Posted: 19 July 2011 at 7:08amI don't see the necessity - most tests provide a positive result within 5 days and I see better ways of managing this without timeless matches.              1)  Prepare wickets that deteriorate after about 3 days.              2)   Increase the overs per day to 100 or 18 overs per hour  (that'll shake the players up!)                  3)  Make the game's duration 30 hours long , even if that goes beyond 5 days - this for rain effected matches.             I can't see any match not being resolved under those circumstances and if it's still undecided after these stipulations , then have some sort of bowl off.     I don't want to see 10 days matches - I have work to go to!Edited by Sledger - Today at 7:08am

Author: GroundieSubject: Is a county groundsmans' lot a happy one?Posted: 14 July 2011 at 7:09amThere has been a lot of horror stories lately surrounding groundsmen coming under enormous pressure from captains/coaches/ceo's to produce certain surfaces and also cases where the groundsman has been overruled, pitches too green, pitches too used. Pitch marks are dropping yet clubs feel justified because they are getting results.

Groundcare : Outfield care

Author: theroddersSubject: Outfield carePosted: 05 July 2011 at 4:32pmI play club cricket on a ground which shares its outfield with a football club. It used to be the case that the football pitch would only encroach one side of the outfield but as the years went by it is now the case that all sides of the outfield have football played on it during the off season. With so much sport being played and the field not getting any rest it's needless to say it's in a pretty sorry state, there are areas where there isn't much grass growth and other areas where there are lots of weeds growing, the worst part is the huge cracks in the ground (some large enough to fit a cricket ball!) and the soil being incredibly bumpy.Does anybody have any advice on what can be done during the short window in April (approximately 4 weeks) to improve the state of the outfield? I have been told by a livery owner to chain harrow and then roll the outfield, will this be beneficially to my cause? (please note we only own a heavy roller) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Current Matches : India in England

Author: kirankriSubject: India in EnglandPosted: 04 July 2011 at 9:29amThe Indian test squad has been announced.Gautam Gambhir (vice-capt), Virender Sehwag, Abhinav Mukund, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar Should be a fascinating series. Will surely be the last England tour for Dravid, Sachin and VVS. Dravid and VVS getting some runs in the ongoing WI tour is a good sign for the Indians. Raina or Yuvraj whoever plays at no.6 will struggle I feel (unless they come in to bat with score looking like 300/4). Swann v/s top 5 Indian batsman should be another interesting contest. Harbhajan may not do that well considering the fact, English batsmen gets to play a world class spinner Swann in the nets. Praveen kumar could be interesting. Though I don't rate him, he could be more than handful in English conditions. Actually going with 5 bowlers could be a better option for Indians considering that, both Raina and Yuvraj are not great test batsman. With possibly 4 right handers (Trott, Bell, Peiterson & Prior), Misra could be an interesting pick. Also Misra, Harbhajan, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer and Sharma can all contribute 15-20 runs with the bat.

General Cricket Talk : Windies cricket woes

Author: SledgerSubject: Windies cricket woesPosted: 13 June 2011 at 6:38amCertainly the squabbling in the background amongst both the management and the players is not helping Windies cricket at all.  The whole setup strikes me as amatuerish in the extreme and whilst that might have been okay in the 60's and even through to the 80's , it leaves them with a huge disadvantage in the game today.  Remember , the great sides on the 70's and 80's still had to deal with officialdom which , at best was flakey , at worst shambolic.  That they came through was because the players had pride and not a little skill !   The current players seem driven only by money - simply put , they're unprofessional - they have some fine players , but their attitude leaves a lot to be desired.

Author: MikeySubject: First memories of cricket followingPosted: 10 June 2011 at 10:26amI started watching cricket seriously in 2000 when I was about 10 years old. But I do have memories going back to around 1996 or 1997, back when Taylor, the Waugh twins and Warne were at their best. I got to see the best part of McGrath and Warne, which was a privilege. Was a big fan of SAF and Pakistan too, for some reason I always liked watching those teams play. Donald and Klusener were pretty awesome back then, so were Saqi and Shoaib! In saying that though, I have read books about cricket all through the 90s and have seen a lot of footage which I have been able to access.

A must watch for any cricket fan and I think a great film for non-cricket fans too (if you can get them to watch it).Have you seen any of the above films (or any others for that matter)? Planning on going to see Fire in Babylon soon...

General Cricket Talk : Australia's New Contract List

Author: MikeySubject: Australia's New Contract ListPosted: 07 June 2011 at 7:27amThey stuck my Hauritz for a long time, they should have continued with him. I'd also like to see Johnson go and Harris lead the attack. Bollinger is also one of the best limited overs bowlers around and he can do the job in the test format. Need to play a side like this in tests:1. Watson2. Hughes3. Ponting4. Clarke*5. Khawaja6. Hussey, M7. Paine†8. Harris9. Hauritz10. Bollinger11. Hilfenhaus/SiddleI still have faith in Hilfenhaus, he has the ability , pace and swing. If not him, then Siddle.I still can't believe O'Keefe can't get recognised by the selectors, he's light years ahead of Doherty as a spinner and a top 6 batsman. He's definitely got more about him than Smith. If they want a spinning all-rounder, which could be useful, particularly with North gone and no great spinner in the side, then play O'Keefe at 6. He's got the talent, and stick with him.

General Cricket Talk : Shahid Afridi retires from International Cricket

Author: sam_ahmedSubject: Shahid Afridi retires from International CricketPosted: 30 May 2011 at 8:10pmAfridi has announced his retirement from International cricket saying "he cannot play under a board which has no respect for it's own players". This is such a shocking incident, I really cannot believe this. For how long will Ijaz Butt continue to kill Pakistan cricket? and for how long will Pakistani cricketers continue to hurt themselves because of some idiots? This has to be the saddest news I've heard this year.

General Cricket Talk : Worcs sign a bluffer!

Author: ClobberSubject: Worcs sign a bluffer!Posted: 27 May 2011 at 3:46pmThis is an amazing story coming out todayWorcestershire have released batsman Adrian Shankar after barely two weeks with the club - and there is more to the departure than a simple change of mind. The background of Shankar, who represented Worcestershire in the CB40 and County Championship last week, and whose deal was terminated without further comment on Thursday, has started to unravel. It has emerged he is actually three years older than he told the county and talked his way into a two-year contract through a mixture of bluff and bravado. Worcestershire only signed Shankar on May 11. In the press release that announced this, the club stated that Shankar was 26 years old and had just returned from a prolific winter in Sri Lanka. It also stated that he was in demand from several other counties.None of it is true. Shankar is actually 29 and, while he may have played some cricket in Sri Lanka, it was not at first-class or an equivalent level. Shankar left Bedford School (he played in the same team as Alastair Cook) after his A Levels in 2000, made his second XI debut in 1999 (for Nottinghamshire) and his first-class debut in 2002. He's subsequently played second XI cricket for Sussex, Worcestershire, Lancashire and Middlesex. Were the details he gave Worcestershire correct, it would have meant he made his second team debut aged just 14. But when Shankar registered at Cambridge and Bedford, he gave his date of birth as May 1982. Only much later did it change to May 1985. It seems he produced identification proving that he was born in 1985, but he has explained his past by suggesting he might have been the youngest Cambridge University captain in history. Until yesterday, even the Cambridge University Cricket website (www.cucc.net) carried that version of events. Meanwhile, a little research proved that several of the players he was supposed to have played against in Sri Lanka were actually playing elsewhere on the same days.Shankar has also said that his career progression has been held-up by an 18-month bout of glandular fever, that he played tennis to national standard as a junior and that he was in the Arsenal academy at the start of Arsene Wenger's tenure. On the field Shankar is, at best, an ordinary player. After a decade in the game, he had a first-class average of just 19 and has passed 50 only once in 21 innings. He made 143 in the Varsity Match of 2002 (as a 17-year-old, if you believe his version of events) but, as Chris Scott, the Cambridge UCCE coach, said: "The bowling was unbelievably bad. He was a poor player and there's no way I would have recommended him."Oddly, however, when Shankar signed for Lancashire, the Cambridge coach was quoted in a press release referring to him as one of the finest young players the side had seen since John Crawley. "I phoned Lancashire and made it clear that I'd never said anything of the sort," Scott said. "No-one at Worcestershire or Lancashire asked my opinion before they signed him." Instead of smelling a rat, however, Lancashire simply removed the offending paragraph.Does any of this matter? Is it just an example of a determined man refusing to give up on his dream?Perhaps. But Shankar was also taking another man's place in the Worcestershire team. And, by claiming to be 26, Shankar slipped in under the threshold to qualify for the young player incentives handed out by the ECB to first-class counties. He therefore gave himself an unfair advantage in the fight for a place in the Worcestershire team. His swift release was no surprise. The episode also raises questions about Worcestershire. It seems incredible that no-one at the club thought to check Shankar's story. Five minutes spent on the web would have been enough to raise suspicions; ten minutes on the phone would have confirmed them.Instead, however, Worcestershire contented themselves with a photocopy of a passport and took Shankar's word for his former achievements. They even threw Shankar straight into their first team - as an opening batsman - without even taking a look at him in a Second XI game (though he did play for their second team in 2003). He was out for a third-ball duck against Middlesex and, batting in the middle-order in the Championship against Durham, was unbeaten on 10 when injury ended his innings. The only thing I can think of that is comparable is when Southampton signed a player after receiving a recommendation on the phone from what they thought was George Weah. They brought the guy on as a sub in a Premier League game and very quickly realised he couldn't play to save his life.

General Cricket Talk : New Stats for Bowlers

Author: kirankriSubject: New Stats for BowlersPosted: 20 May 2011 at 11:25amYou can't judge a player just by his stats. Yes. But stats definetly gives us few details about performances.I was thinking of a new stats for bowlers. Currently they project the average and strike rate. One of the things ignored with this is the quality of the batsman they have dismissed. A wicket of Viv Richards by giving away 40 runs is much more worthy and requires more skill than getting 3 wickets of Holding, Garner and Roberts for 20.How about having another element of stats which sums up the batting average of all the batsmen dismissed by the bowler and dividing by the number of wickets. If you dismiss Richards twice, the parameter would be 50.23+50.23/2 = 50.23.If you have dismissed Holding and Garner, it would be 13.78+12.44/2 = 13.11.We know batsman's average itself may not reflect everything, but atleast it gives us a fair idea if he has got 80% victims as tail enders.Any thoughts?

Coaching : Help with ball timing and when to move towards bal

Author: iffy83Subject: Help with ball timing and when to move towards balPosted: 10 May 2011 at 11:40pmFirstly Im glad I have found such a forum.  No I just hope to god that someone can help me.  So here's the problem,  I have real trouble with shot selection and when to actully move towards the ball to play a shot.  I think could be solved if someone could tell me when to initiate a movement towards the ball.  For example, do I move to play a shot when;immediately when the ball is released or do I wait for one to two metres after the ball is releasedor do I wait until the ball has traveled half way down the wicketor do I wait till the ball is two metres away from my body to initiate a stroke. This may sound stupid and confusing but I would really appreciete if someone could explain this issue to me.  Please dont hesitate to ask for more info.  Appreciate in replies recieved

General Cricket Talk : Afghanistan To Tour Pakistan

Author: -JP-Subject: Afghanistan To Tour PakistanPosted: 10 May 2011 at 12:46pmAfghanistan are to play three one-day games against a Pakistan 'A' team later this month and become the first international team to tour the country following the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team covoy in Lahore in March 2009.The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have confirmed that the three 50-over matches will be played in Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Abbottabad on 25th, 27th and 29th May.Full story: http://www.cricketworld.com/afghanistan-to-tour-pakistan-later-this-month/27799.htmAt this point, I'd just like to share with you what I wrote in April 2009 in an editorial for the magazine:"Congratulations are also due to Afghanistan, who have earned themselves ODI status for the next 4 years, and they confirmed that on the same day that the ICC made the only decision they could have done, taking 2011 World Cup matches out of Pakistan. Given that there are no international grounds in Afghanistan, maybe, just maybe, they will become the first team to play in Pakistan since the tragedy."It has been noted that I should put my money where my mouth is!
