Can NZ beat Eng

I was all fired up for the English tour of New Zealand, but that was a month or so ago, the 4 limted overs matches since then have quietened it.

But over the ditch they are still excited.

And so who better than Sportsfreak to sprout forth their views.

With the inevitable regularity of the arrival of Halley’s comet, New Zealand is finally about to start a proper test series. It is of more that 2 games, and it is against a side ranked ahead of it, but still beatable. If you close you eyes and try really hard, you can also pretend it is actually a 6 match series, like real test nations sometimes play; the second half of the series being in England in May and June.

It will certainly make a welcome change from the 6 month Indian tour of Australia, and associated theatrics that have sunk to new levels of banality. It will also make a change from the daily defections and contract breaking from disaffected players.

A large part of this anticipation is that it is hard to remember what a real test series was all about. There is no reference point. It is a bit like describing what a peaceful day in Baghdad would be like, or trying to assess what Britney Spears may suggest as a way of overcoming Global Warming.

This is not like previewing an ODI against Sri Lanka, for example.

The New Zealand selectors have not made it any easier either. The Wise Men have surprised all by Picking Grant Elliot in the 13, despite has mediocre performances in the first-class portion of the NZ season to date, back in 2007. Perhaps this is just a case of If you can’t beat them, join them; every side needs a South African somewhere.

But will he play as a batsman, and an extra bowler? Or will they take more conservative approach and further strengthen the NZ lower order? Or is he just in the mix to learn drink-mixing techniques from Patel? Double-guessing the mindset of Camp Braces is a tawdry business, and tends to result in Vincent-like symptoms.

Leaving aside the Elliot confusion, there is a glaring frailty about the NZ batting line-up. Bell earned a recall after scoring a million runs before Xmas in domestic cricket, but he has hardly batted since. He is joined by How who boasts a test average of 14 and played his first 1st class game in a year last week.

After that it gets worse. The options for number 3 are Sinclair who is as confidence inspiring as he has always been, or playing Fleming out of position as some kind of punishment for making himself unavailable for the second leg of the series. For New Zealand to succeed, they need their best test batsmen scoring as many runs as possible. But ego politics have marginalised the former captain, and the body language is not promising. It was never meant to end like this.

Make no mistake, Taylor is a talent of the future, but the ingrained obsession with the slog-sweep and other recently introduced technical deficiencies mean he is currently a liability. A succession of innings getting snicked out to Hoggard outswingers will do him no long-term favours.

As is so often the case, the strength is in the batsmen to follow. Oram has been in good nick all season and Ian Smith needs something to shout about, McCullum is in the form of his life now that he’s Dunedin’s richest man, and Vettori somehow keeps getting runs. There are no points for elegance in test cricket. But these three can not be expected to do it all on their own in every innings.

The bowling is steady yet unspectacular. Martin will be there or thereabouts throughout, although it is a bit much to expect him to carry out all wicket-taking responsibilities on his own. He will need help from the end, and that means that Mills will need to swing the red ball like he swings the white one. He may be ranked 5th in the ODI hit parade, but he needs to be able transfer that. That much-coveted IPL contract is only a decent test series away, and he will be wanting his brother to do something useful for him.

For the tourists, test cricket is less of an exotic rarity, although they are coming off back-to-back series defeats, and are still suffering from the Ashes humiliation, and subsequent shuffling of the deck-chairs. Having said that, England are in the rare position of being able to boast an entire top 6 averaging over 40. And England likes being able to boast.

There has been something unseemly about the desperation to shoe-horn Andrew Strauss back into the side. After a couple of months of being outscored by BJ Watling for Northern Districts, he got the chance to play himself into form in both the lead-up games, finally coming right in his last innings. So he will play, which apparently is a great relief as he’s safe at 1st slip; a timely reminder of just how awful England’s fielding was in the ODI series, and a vote of no confidence to their new Australian wicket-keeper. The result of this is that Owais Shah, despite scoring 96 in his only meaningful innings on tour will miss out. The shadowy hand of Peter Moores at work.

A lot will depend on how the English will tackle Vettori. The most effective way is to keep him out at the start, wait until he’s wheeled his way through all of his 23 variations, before wearing him down. That is what England did so successfully in 2004, but it is unlikely this team will show that discipline. There was no Pietersen having to prove he is the gift to Modern Man in 2004.

The injury to Sidebottom is a worry for England. As annoying as he may be, he was the only bowler to perform consistently throughout the ODIs, and is the obvious foil to Hoggard and Harmison. In addition, it is now widely appreciated that New Zealand can not play left-armers; especially Fleming. Without him, there is more pressure on Harmison, and we know he does not like that.

In his probable absence there is the hope that they will plump for Anderson. But he was just so awful in the ODIs that they are more likely to pick Broad, given that Frequent Flyer Tremlett’s tour lasted for the characteristic 5 days. Broad’s inclusion will raise the pulse of teenage girls and returning Sydney Mardi Gras tourists alike.

So who will win? Well, like comet-watching, it is hard to predict what will happen in such an unusual occurrence. The home side have thrown away a lot of the traditional home advantage by leading into this with a complete lack of first-class play, and start as underdogs. On paper, England are demonstrably the better side. But they still have the ability to self-destruct white away from home, especially in God-forsaken dumps like Hamilton, and the key New Zealanders do have a few things to play for.

how i sees em

Some of you may notice I see cricket differently.

You guys see a leg spinner, I see an absurdist.

You see a test nation, I see an ex lover.

You see Shaun Pollock play cricket, I pretend he never played.

You see Jacques Kallis, I see a dud root.

So when I look at international batsmen this is what I see.

Michael Clarke â€" a teenage boy who is eagerly trying to please his mates hot mum. The more Cleavage she gives, the more excited he gets.

Sanath Jayasuriya - slices the ball like some Genghis Khan wannabe.

Virender Sehwag â€" bats like a dude who will fu©k anything. Doesn’t matter if he hits or misses, just likes to get laid a lot.

Adam Gilchrist â€" swings the bat like a junkie swatting away imaginary monkeys.

Kumar Sangakarra â€" has the presence of Lee Marvin whilst holding a bat, and almost as funny as Lee whilst using the gloves.

Matty Hayden - bats like a 14 year old kid beating the sh1t out of a 10 year old kid.

Graeme Smith - tries to bat like a 14 year old kid beating the sh1t out of a 10 year old kid.

Kevin Pietersen â€" is a lot like Robbie Williams, wishes he could make it big in America, must learn to be content with the fact he gets laid a lot regardless of America.

Michael Hussey â€" is a robot sent from the future to destroy us.

Jacques Kallis â€" has the rare ability to suck the fun out of cricket to such a degree, you wonder how hard it would be to use a sniper rifle.

Shahid Afridi â€" bats like an ice addict who has just gunned down two cops and knows they’re gonna find him soon.

Runako Morton â€" is something of a Howard Hughes batsman.

Sachin Tendulkar â€" bats like a kid with a bat 4 times too heavy, 3 times too long, and yet has found a way to use it.

Shivnarine Chandrepaul â€" stands at the crease like a kid from Chernobyl, bats like a kid from Harvard Law school.

Stephen Fleming â€" always seems to have a good book in the change room.

Michael Vaughn â€" Used to be a batsmen.

Ian Bell â€" is a carpenter with all the tools, and very little knowledge of when and where to use them.

Ross Taylor â€" is like a really hot chick, who knows she is really hot, and therefore not that hot.

Chris Gayle â€" a drunken Canadian woodchopper.

Mohammad Ashraful â€" is William Shatner in Star Trek, flashes of brilliance, but it will be a long time before he gets to Boston Legal.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

Sachin is old and useless

According to a Murdoch owned paper, Sachin Tendulkar is sh1thouse when chasing runs in one dayers.

Not only that, but the Indian team management all agree, but are too gutless to tell him.

I have to agree with the indian management and the newspapers, Sachin Tendulkar is no good at chasing runs and should probably be terminated from opening due to general sh1tness.

He is clearly no good and should be replaced by someone with a much cooler French dictator style name.

By the way how did the game go tonight. I’m assuming Sachin failed, miserable old bastard.

Australia probably made like 400 runs and Lee took nine wickets.

Go Australia, you guys are awesome….

I also assume Bangladesh are thrashing South Africa.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

Cindy's pre game ritual

CAUTION: This blog contains satirical sex scenes involving South Africans, if you are under 18, a prude, religious, or South African you should probably walk away now.

I was going to write about the final finals in the Kerry Packer series.

Mind you I didn’t even know it started today, I pressed the snooze button a few games ago, which is exactly why the series is going.

What did catch my eye, thanks to sportsfreak, was Kallis’ extraordinary innings against the Bangladeshi Kittens.

39 off 120 balls with no boundaries.

This coming after the record opening partnership, which shall never be written about here.

This got me thinking about how Jacques likes to have $ex.

I know it’s a disgusting thought, but try and hold your upchuck until the end.

Cindy Nel is pretty hot.

She is no Natalie Portman.

But if she walked in and offered herself and you were on your couch with potato chips on your stomach, an empty beer beside you, and the cricket had just finished, you’d be hard pressed to knock her back.

And I’m talking to you too ladies.

But imagine being Cindy Nel, Jacques comes home from a well constructed 120 off 332 balls against New Zealand, and he says I want to make love.

You know the drill.

Run him a bath. Not too hot, not too cold. You will play his favourite ocean sounds whilst in the bath.

In the bedroom the lighting must be just right, 18 candles, they all have their positions, cannot be moved. The music is always Kenny G, preferably breathless, or the moment.

Following this is the maintenance session, you will thoroughly clean, wax and pluck every part of you. Jacques doesn’t like grass on the wicket.

Then you must quickly log onto the internet and check out his average.

You will then go into the bathroom and dry him off, all the while you will be telling him how sexy he is, how adored he is by the public, how everyman wants to be him.

Topics that cannot be broached, his ever widening girth. The bald spot, or the fact that no one really likes him.

This shall be followed by a slow passionless kiss, the sort of kiss that makes your toes uncurl. This kiss should go for 20 minutes. No pauses are allowed.

Then the love making can proceed. As Cindy you will disrobe privately and quickly enter under the covers and lay naked on the bed in what is known as the starfish pose.

Jacques will then enter the bed, still under the covers and position him self on top of you, being careful not to touch you in any erotic way.

He will then enter your vagina with his penis, because kiddies, that is how mummy and daddy have $ex with their neighbours.

At this point, you (Cindy) will be reasonably happy. But unfortunately, Jacques then very slowly and deliberately moves in and out, without ever going to far in, or too far out, for the next 4 hours.

He never once changes angle, position, speed, technique, or depth. Just a slow and steady semi penetration until he is happy with the results, and he squeezes out a drop of Kallis juice.

Never more than a drop.

Afterwards you will be required to whisper ever so sweetly 57.54 into his ear. You shouldn’t be out of breath, so this should be easy to do.

Then you must get Jacques eye mask, his ear plugs, his scented candles and leave him alone in the master bedroom to get his beauty sleep.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

junior captains and golden ducks

Mohammad Ashraful is about 9 years old.

This is obviously a little younger than the average captain.

Cameron White is about 16 years old, and he is still younger than the average captain.

So far this year both men have been getting a lot of golden ducks.

At least two each.

Is captaining a cricket side at such a young age affecting the first ball that both men face.

Or is their homework starting to pile up.

It's an interesting theory and one i will follow up with a 28 page analysis.

I may include pie charts.

I will write about almost anything to ensure i do not to talk about a certain players double ton.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

Dizzy's last tune

For some reason I liked Dizzy Gillespie from the get go.

It might have been cause he was really fast, really young and fast, really young, or cause he had a pony tail, who can tell.

As the years went on he gave people a lot to like about him.

He wasn’t just an aboriginal, he was a fast bowling snarling aboriginal player.

Fu©k load of wickets never hurt.

The amount of effort that went into every ball, some times at delivery it looked like he was giving birth to twins.

His batting, which resembled a father protecting his hot daughter’s virginity.

His bowling, especially his bowling faces. The angry one he pulled on the way to the wicket that said, if there was a wicket inside my dog, I would gut him with a spoon to get it out.

Then on the way back from the crease, he was the most relaxed guy, laughing and smiling.

He had an off cutter than could cut you to pieces and he one rode his bat like Happy Gilmore.

Plus he brought back the mullet.

Nuff said.

The first part of his career was severely injury prone, think Shane Watson, but talented.

And for years every time he went back to his mark he would stretch and I would fear the worst. I was like an over bearing mother.

After all the first aid trips he lost a bit of pace, I blame the face plant with Steve Waugh for that.

Then he became reliable body wise, he was like a warrior in a war film, held together with bandages, but still seemed to get the job done.

After the pace left, the accuracy took over, his line and length was fuller and straighter than McGrath.

I still think if they kept a record of how many catches were dropped per bowler per match he’d be high up on that list.

The amount of times he would get an opening batsmen dropped at slip, only for McGrath to clean up at the other end was extraordinary.

For a while there he was Australia’s best bowler.

To be Australia’s best bowler at any time is pretty good, but to do so when Warne & McGrath are in the side is pretty damn special.

Then Dizzy went a little Ian Baker Finch, he seemed to completely lose is ability to move the ball, bowl a good length and miss placed a yard of pace.

This ended with him sitting out the 2005 ashes.

It would have been an ugly way to go, but the selectors picked him as a batsman and let him smack the kittens around for a test double ton.

Then he was shipped back to South Australia.

His file was stamped, in case of emergency. That emergency being if Brett lee and Stuart Clark died, or got caught in kiddie porn ring.

It didn’t happen.

So now at the age of 32 (I didn’t check it but it seems right) Dizzy has decided to get some superannuation in the ICL.

According to the very well paid Cricket Australia Administracrats, this means he can no longer ply his trade at radelaide Oval.

This is a shame, because the man still gives

Dizzy you will be remembered, as a gun opening bowler, as a brick wall, and as one hell of a mulletteer.

Enjoy the coinage.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

Hussey is great, Victoria not so much

I understand some of you may be bored with all this talk of David Hussey (sign it please).

But the dude continues to be amazing.

Today he went out at 4/129.

Nothing spectacular about that, except he bats at number 4 and was out for 84.

He seems to bat on different pitches than all his team mates.

Ofcourse all of this may mean jack and sh1t as Victoria look a very shaky 7 for 217 chasing over 400.
