Author: sam_ahmedSubject: England in India (2011)Posted: 28 September 2011 at 6:43pmENG tour India for 5 ODI's and 1 T20 in what will be a subcontinental test for them. ENG have announced their squad with Kevin Pieterson making a comeback, a couple of new faces in the squad and I don't know much about them.India are expected to announce their squad for the first two ODI's tomorrow, Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Munaf and Zaheer are all still injured, Gauti should be back though and they are considering bringing back Nehra, although I would seriously want to see Irfan pathan back in the team, he certainly can do a lot better than all those who were tried in ENG.List of Fixtures:Sat Oct 8 04:00 GMT | 09:30 local09:30 ISTTBC v England XIGymkhana Ground, Hyderabad Tue Oct 11 04:00 GMT | 09:30 local09:30 ISTTBC v England XIGymkhana Ground, Hyderabad Fri Oct 14           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST1st ODI - India v EnglandRajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, HyderabadMon Oct 17           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST2nd ODI - India v EnglandFeroz Shah Kotla, DelhiThu Oct 20           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST3rd ODI - India v EnglandPunjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, ChandigarhSun Oct 23           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST4th ODI - India v EnglandWankhede Stadium, MumbaiTue Oct 25           09:00 GMT | 14:30 local14:30 IST5th ODI - India v EnglandEden Gardens, KolkataSat Oct 29           14:30 GMT | 20:00 local20:00 ISTOnly T20I - India v EnglandEden Gardens, Kolkata

Current Matches : Australia in South Africa

Author: MikeySubject: Australia in South AfricaPosted: 28 September 2011 at 11:41amAustralia will be touring South Africa, the nation which is ranked no.2 in Test cricket. The T20 squad for Australia has been announced with Johnson dropped - no surprises there. Haddin has retired from the format and the incumbent Tim Paine is out injured, nonetheless Wade is the better option. Paine is a test specialist in my opinion and I'd like to see him in the test side as soon as possible, even ahead of Haddin.Mitchell Marsh, brother of Shaun, is in the squad ahead of Hastings who is also injured. He's a 19 year old all rounder who Mickey Arthur compares to Jacques Kallis. He's a genuine all rounder and from the looks of things his game is a lot better than Moises Henriques, whose career never really took off.The other bolter is Patrick Cummins, the 18 year old NSW fast bowler who scored a CA contract out of no where. I've seen the kid bowl and he already hits 150kph, believe it or not. He has been doing a lot of weight and strength training and presumably he's still growing so on that basis it wouldn't surprise me if he continued to his 150kph on a regular basis. His action looks a little bit like Anderson's, but there's a little bit of Mohammed Zahid about the way he bowls. The way the ball rises and the sheer pace is very Zahid-esque. That is, if anybody has seen Zahid bowl before. I haven't seen anyone this genuinely quick emerge from Australia at SUCH a young age since Lee or maybe Tait, although Cummins' action is more orthodox and not round arm/slingy.

Current Matches : West Indies in England - 2 T20's

Author: SledgerSubject: West Indies in England - 2 T20'sPosted: 23 September 2011 at 6:27amI suppose this mini-series needs it's own thread , but it won't fill too many pages !   The 2 T20's have been arranged because of the original agreement between the ECB and Standford (who's still under investigation) -it was do this or repay a lot of money!   Graeme Swann is England captain because of Broad's injury and he leads a very young side. Many of the Windies star names are absent too , so the English will start favourite.             The 1st game is today , with the 2nd on Sunday.  Ticket sales have been brisk - hardy souls in England , because cricket at the end of September can be a bum-numbing affair !

Championship team of season

Marcus TrescothickAs imperious as ever, Trescothick scored 290 more runs than anyone else in either division, despite missing three games to a cruel injury. His dominance is such that it has become a cliché to describe him as batting on a different pitch from everyone else.Mike CarberryThough it wasn’t enough to keep Hampshire in division one, Carberry’s return, after fears his career was over, was astounding. Against Yorkshire, he hit 300*, displaying the range of shots and concentration that earned him an England Test cap only 18 months ago, while his last-day century against Warwickshire denied them the title.Chris RogersBrought in to average over 50 and lead a side to promotion that finished eighth in division two in the previous two seasons, Rogers made the twin challenges seem positively easy.Dale BenkensteinThere was no third championship in four years for Durham, but Benkenstein’s excellence remained unabated: only Trescothick exceeded his 1353 division one run
s. Long established as his side’s crisis man, Benkenstein’s experience as skipper was a valuable aid for Phil Mustard.Zander de BruynIn a Surrey top six that is as gung-ho as they come, de Bruyn provides stickability, and two hundreds and two fifties in the last three games allowed Surrey to claim a remarkable promotion. Somerset fans, not unreasonably, will feel they might just have won the championship had he not been lured to The Oval.Jonny Bairstow (wicket-keeper)In an otherwise bleak season for Yorkshire Bairstow’s excellence, culminating in a memorable England ODI debut, provided some solace. Attractive and calm in front of the stumps, he scored his runs at a strike-rate â€" 69 â€" that few top-order batsmen can match. With the gloves Bairstow improved but is not yet the equal of his late father. Will GidmanWith one first-class appearance before the season began, bookmakers would have given any odds on Gidman becoming the first man for 15 years to score 1000 champ
ionship runs and take 50 wickets. But do that he did; and with a batting average (45) more than double his bowling one (21). A late developer at 26, Gidman deserves England Lions recognition.Glen Chapple (captain)It’s not only sentimentality that earns Chapple a place in this side, which his achievement in lifting the pennant without stars ensures he leads. At 37, his canny fast-medium bowling was effective enough to claim 55 wickets at under 20, despite often not being fully fit. Though he was uncharacteristically short of runs, Lancashire would not have won the championship without his 97 in their penultimate game.Tim MurtaghUnlucky to never represent England (though he may yet play for Ireland), Murtagh’s best season yet propelled Middlesex to promotion. A round 80 wickets in 15 matches highlight his potency, which is especially great with the new ball, as a three-wicket bust in 16 balls against Derbyshire illustrates.David MastersLazy cricket writers have spent years
describing Masters as a “nagging seamer” and “journeyman”, but he forced them to be rather more imaginative after claiming 93 wickets. Masters’ mastery of the Tiflex ball and constant ability to seam it was never more evident than when he claimed 8/10 against Leicestershire.Gary KeedyThe mark of Keedy’s bowling is that his left-arm spin is almost as effective in April as August, while his parsimony (giving away just 2.5 an over) means Lancashire never lost control in the field. His 4-57 from 28 overs in the first innings of the victory at Taunton perfectly encapsulated his qualities.

Further when you bowl in the nets, bowl medium pace n increase it very slowly and then see the miracles.

Historical Figures

I was playing around with the idea (suggested by my old mate JB) of how various historical figures would have fared as cricketers. And this is what I came up with.

Galileo Galilei

Batsman - A failure - always batted at no. 11. Spent too much time observing what the bowler was trying to do, and too little time actually reacting. Should have listened more to the ultimately sage advice of the former opening batsman Kepler.

Bowler - This was his real strength. You hear talk about bowlers 'gaining pace' off the pitch - GG was a master at this. He had truly mastered the ability to uniformly accelerate the ball.

Fielder - Particularly strong under the high ball - an expert at judging the parabola of hits into the outfield.

Overall - Great potential that was ultimately undone by off-field politics. He should never have written his autobiography "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems" in which he openly criticized the excessive power base wielded by the BCCI and argued that the world of cricket did not rotate simply around India. It ultimately resulted in the loss of his T20 contract and his career finished in anonymity.

Stephen Hawking

Batting - Formed a solid opening partnership with Penrose. Good technique with a penchant for taking quick singularities. Did have some trouble in running threes until he improved his turning circle. Most remembered now for popularising the block hole paradox shot, which revolutionised how to play yorkers in T20 cricket.

Bowling - Nil. Reminiscent of the late 1950s with Gordon Rorke, Hawking's truly unique bowling style was quickly outlawed, as his very long delivery slide meant that umpires could not accurately determine the legality of the ball and he often was able to release the ball nearly half way down the pitch.

Fielding - Great short leg fielder with an ability to get a considerable amount of mass behind the ball. Noted sledger from close in, but some pedants have raised concerns that many of his memorable lines were scripted.

Overall - Often remembered in the same category as Mike Brearly: a magnificent cricketing brain that perhaps over-shadowed his physical abilities. Once again though - great sledger. Best line is probably the classic and oft repeated "When I hear of Schrodinger's bat, I reach for my pistol."

Michael Jackson

Batting - A modern figure that harked back to the grand days of George Bonner, Jackson was a child prodigy that was picked primarily for his aggressive stroking of the tail end, particularly in under-age teams. He had many big hits around the world, and still holds a number of records. His nickname of Whacko Jacko quickly emerged after his stunning debut performance in the IPL when he combined with Indian superstar, Off the Wall Rahul Dravid. He was famous for walking, even before Gilly made it commonplace.

Bowling - Jackson was only an occasional bowler, but gained a second, but less flattering nickname, as the King of Long Hops. He did establish a long standing sponsorship with Pepsi but was ultimately burnt by the deal.

Fielding - Jackson's reputation was largely ruined on the basis of a number of eventually unsubstantiated claims of balls tampering. Many influential people believed he was a fiddler when no-one was watching, but this could not be proven.

Post Cricket - After retiring, Jackson went on to a surprisingly successful career as an umpire. Similar to Australian Darrell Hair, he was a firm decision maker as he saw everything as black and white. He stood in many different tests that ended in thrillers, but also found himself in a number of bad and dangerous situations, however his attitude that he was invincible ultimately saw him through. Jackson sadly passed away recent just before a long awaited comeback as a match referee.
