England's new low

England have stumbled from one disappointment to the next post the 2005 Ashes, winning just two series out of eight. But the humiliation by New Zealand in this Test really is something else: a new low for the England side.

New Zealand played very well, without doubt. They batted with immense patience and pugnaciousness, seizing the game with the 150-run stand between Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori. With the ball, they were relentless in their discipline, bowling cannily and with great skill on a docile track.

But still. This is a side who are ranked seventh in the world for good reason. Their best bowled by far, Shane Bond, has been scapegoated and banned for signing up with the ICL. Their bowling lacks any x-factor; even Dan Vettori averages in the mid-30s. Before this game, no one in their side averaged under 32 with the ball, or 40 with the bat, even allowing for a number of games against Bangladesh.

For their part, England were meek and timid. They were overwhelmed by fear with the bat as, save for some gorging on the awful West Indian attack, they have since Adelaide 2006. Scoring at 2 an over over 173 overs in their first innings defies belief in the modern Test game, especially against an attack not unreasonably considered toothless. Yes, New Zealand are perennially written off, but, for all their ODI qualities, they play less than half the number of Tests England do. Against South Africa - a side England would doubtless claim they would expect to beat - they were twice pulverised, failing to past 200 over four innings in the series.

In the first innings England's batting exhibited the familiar tendency of failing to reach a hundred (or even 70) despite being well set. Crease occupation has been a big concern, but the real problem was their overwhelmingly defensive mindset, paralysed by fear on a docile track against an attack that, for all their endeavour, are no world-beaters.In the second, they were simply pathetic, collapsing in time-honed fashion like a pack of cards. On both occasions, judicious batting with a sensible, positive mindset would have ensured against alarms. Paul Collingwood encapsulated the depressing timidity, crawling to a 50-ball two.

There seems to be a collective loss of self-belief and conviction, even afflicting Kevin Pietersen, that has engulfed the entire set-up, suggesting 'change for change's sake' may actually have some merit. Michael Vaughan's captaincy, albeit not his batting, has patently failed to impress since his return to the side. But on raw skill levels, too, England's deficiencies are increasingly apparent, despite their superlative catching in this game.

With the ball, England were equally pathetic, with Ryan Sidebottom's skill and indefatigableness unable to cover up for the lack of incision elsewhere, with even Matthew Hoggard seriously off the pace . Most people have long since had enough of Steve Harmison's little boy lost impression on tours, and he has run out of excuses. So, indeed have the side, who have truly hit a nadir.

The same was said when they were bowled out for 81 in Sri Lanka though. While Shah, Broad, Tremlett and especially Ramprakash and Caddick would be in the ideal XIs of many, the grim truth is this is more or less the best England have got.

david hussey is a double edged sword

Indirectly David Hussey has caused me pain.

It wasn’t necessarily his fault, but I am unsure as to who else I should blame.

This all started with my flaccid attempt to get a thousand signatures on the David Hussey petition.

Then Miss Field decided to help it along with a facebook members group.

I used face book for about a week a year ago, and never touched it again.

But having learnt of the group, I decided to reinvest 5 minutes a week to facebook, possibly 4 minutes more than it deserves.

All is well, I got to see a photo of a certain blogger with ice cream on his lip, and the membership of the group is now at 36, ok its not awe inspiring, but its something.

Then the one that got away found me on face book.

You know the chick whose carries your balls through life in her handbag.

I don’t like being found by most people, least of all her, as she reminds me of things I have pretended I have moved on from.

And bad enough that she found me but all her profile pics are of her and her new husband.

Who really needs to see that sh1t.

David Hussey has a lot to answer for.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

stab me through the eyes with a blunt object

I just whipped over to get an update on the Kiwi Pom game.

Monty and Sidebottom faced 59 balls between them for the superb contribution of 3 runs.

Usually I would b a little pissed at missing a test.

I think I would pay not to see this one.

2 runs an over for 170 odd overs.

And I can almost take it from probots and professional batsmen who are putting a high price on their wickets, due the horrible thought of losing their spot, or even worse losing a major sponsor.

But from Tailenders?

You’ve got to be fu©king me.

What England needs is some Murali or Stuart Clark type batting right now, perhaps it will give them some momentum into the bowling.

Maybe it will entertain the 4 awake people at the ground.

But either way it will end it with far less pain than this extraction of a kidney with a tablespoon some people are having the misfortune to watch.

England took the extraordinary step of playing for a draw before the test started.

Remember in 2005 when they played aggressive cricket and won the ashes.

I no longer believe that really happened.

I urge you to do the same.

Then England have been rubbish since the late 80’s and the world seems a more understandable place.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

the depressed sect

According to crockinfo Shaun Tait will be ready to fire first game next year for the Redbacks.

Probably a good thing for the Redbacks, they were crap before they lost Gillespie and Elliott and they are mega crap now.

To be honest I didn’t really read the article the first time, I just saw Tait’s manager was named McRitchie.

It’s like some weird McDonalds burger made of Richie Benaud.

Then I read the article and it said certain depressed AFL footballers and Marcus Trescothick reached out to him.

I didn’t know depressed people were so eager to reach out to each other.

But what Marcus said almost intrigued me as much as the McRitchie burger.

He said “hang in there and just realise there is more to life than playing international cricket”.

Brilliant observation, and also brilliant ashes 2009 planning.

As a mentally "more" fragile opening batsmen he would rather face less men like Tait and more men like Chaminda Vaas.

I’m not saying fast men caused Trescothick’s ills, but unless you’re a sado masochist like Langer, they can’t really help you.

So Trescothick gets on the front foot and plays with Tait's mind.

Sure he only miss hits him through cover for two, but that’s better than what he has done against International bowlers for some time.

But Marcus there are so many other International speedsters you could fu©k with.

Brett Lee could be forced to room with Michael Clarke, all that fighting for the mirror would get to him.

Malinga could be lead astray by getting him a guitar. Because in a band is the only way that hair could be acceptable.

And Steyn could be forced to watch himself over react to getting Chris Gayle out for hours on end. If that doesn’t make him question his very existence, Marcus could hit him on the head with a shovel.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

the unwritten memo

Dear PCB,

Regretfully we have decided, about 4 months ago, that regardless of what happens from now on in the Australian team will not be able to tour Pakistan.

I would like to apologise to the Pakistani cricket board on behalf of Cricket Australia.

The main reason is we scheduled really badly.

We have already cancelled the Bangladesh tour of OZ, "because of the olympics", can you believe people bought that sh1t.

The truth is a tour of Pakistan and playing Bangladesh might tire our players and therefore we will make less money off them, so that cannot happen.

We obviously will make our decision as late as possible.

To the media we will state "safety concerns".

People will assume we mean we are sh1t scared of terrorists.

People will accept that, as people are trained in Australia to be afraid of Muslims, and all Muslims are terrorists, except you guys ofcourse.

We will schedule a tour soon, but we may cancel that to cash in on some one dayers in India.

Perhaps if Pepsi got involved we'd tour more often.

Cheers

the england foreplay method

The England are verging on a new breakthrough in batsmanship.

Ofcourse New Zealand invented it years ago, but no one really noticed.

Now the England are doing it consistently so its bound to fill column spaces from Lahore to another place with a dirty sounding name.

I call it foreplay batting.

It's when a batsmen gets a good base, be it a flashy 30 or a well compiled 70 and then goes out just when the orgasm is on its way.

Ian Bell is the master of it.

The dude is a man man foreplay legend, just don't look for the big bang.

Now Ian's game is slowly rubbing off on his team mates.

Vaughn & Strauss have always flirted with foreplay, but now are full fledged members.

Collingwood is a probot, but he still likes his joints lubed, but not the full oil change.

KP seems to have forgotten about wanting to be the best batsmen in the world, now he wants to look moody and downtrodden, which means he is English now and ready for foreplay.

Alistair Cook looks like he doesn't like foreplay, but in the spirit of the team is trying his best to change his game.

Better to fit in than be different.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"

With Jimmy, we've got no Hopes

Have to disagree with you UJ.

Hopes is Hopeless.

The way he constructed that innings on Tuesday night was useless. Yes he preserved his wicket, but he batted at 60% strike rate, when the run rate asked for 6-7 runs per over. The amount of balls he blocked was infuriating - whether he was trying to impress the test selectors, who knows, but it frustrated the $hit out of me.

This is a bold statement, which will no doubt come back to bite me and goes against the grain of CWB. But Shane Watson (the luckiest and most overrated Australian cricketer ever) is a better bet than Hopes - fit or not.

If UJ is comparing him to Harvey, his cricketing career will be snuffed very shortly.
Go away Hopes, go away.www.cricketwithballs.com "Sign our David Hussey petition"
